App Store refund guide

How to get a refund from Apple for an app, in-app purchase, or subscription

Apple billed it, Apple refunds it.

Updated October 3, 2026 · General information, not legal advice

  1. 01
    Cancel the subscription first

If the charge is a subscription you no longer want, cancel it in Settings → your name → Subscriptions so it does not renew again while the refund is being reviewed. Take a screenshot of the confirmation.

  2. 02
    Open reportaproblem.apple.com

Sign in with the Apple Account that made the purchase, choose “I’d like to…” → “Request a refund”, pick the reason, then select the app, subscription, or in-app item. The charge must already appear on your email receipt; pending charges cannot be refunded yet.

  3. 03
Check the status, then escalate if needed

Apple says to allow 24 to 48 hours for an update, which you can check on the same site. If the request is declined, contact Apple Support with a short written timeline before considering a card dispute.

Apple refund request templates

Apple’s form asks you to pick a reason and select the item. Use these short explanations when there is a text field, or when you contact Apple Support after a declined request.

Fill in what you know and every template below updates. These fields stay in your browser: they are not sent or saved.

This purchase of [item] on [date] for [amount] was made by a family member without my permission.

How this works

Purchases made through the App Store are billed by Apple, not by the app developer, so the developer usually cannot refund you directly. The request goes through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. It takes a few minutes, and a short, specific reason gives the reviewer a clear basis for approving it.

Before you send, and when to escalate

Before you send

  • Sign in with the Apple Account that made the purchase, not a family member’s account.
  • Cancel the subscription before asking for the refund so it cannot renew again.
  • Pick the reason that actually fits; a specific, honest reason is easier to approve.
  • Wait for the email receipt; pending charges cannot be refunded yet.
  • Keep the order ID from the receipt; Apple Support will ask for it.

Escalate when

  • Your request on reportaproblem.apple.com was declined and the purchase clearly did not work as described.
  • The charge does not appear on reportaproblem.apple.com even after the email receipt arrived.
  • The subscription kept renewing after you canceled, or you see charges you do not recognize.
Common questions
Can the app developer refund my App Store purchase?
Usually not. App Store and in-app purchases are processed by Apple, so refunds are requested from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com or through Apple Support. Developers can still help by confirming a bug or outage you can mention in your request.
I don’t see the charge on reportaproblem.apple.com. What now?
If the charge is still pending, wait for the email receipt and try again. If it never appears, check that you are signed in with the Apple Account that made the purchase, or contact Apple Support. If the charge came from a family member, the family organizer can find it in the purchases charged to the shared payment method.
How do I dispute an Apple charge I don’t recognize?
Open reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with the Apple Account that was charged, and look for the item. If it appears and you did not make the purchase, report it there. If it does not appear, or you think your account or card was used without your permission, contact Apple Support and your card issuer.
Will canceling a subscription refund the last payment?
No. Canceling only stops future renewals. You still need to submit a refund request for the charge that already went through.
Apple declined my request. Is that final?
Not necessarily. Contact Apple Support with a short timeline: what was charged, when you canceled, and why the purchase did not deliver what was promised. Keep it factual and attach your receipts.
