How to cancel Planet Fitness and get a refund if they billed you anyway

Seven days before the draft.

Updated October 30, 2026 · General information, not legal advice

Key facts

How to cancel
In person at the home club, written notice mailed to the home club, or through the member portal at planetfitness.com. Rules can vary by location.
Monthly draft
Cancel at least 7 days before the next billing date to stop that draft. Find the date in the member portal or on the agreement.
Annual fee
Cancel at least 7 days before the annual fee date to stop that charge.
Early buyout
If the membership has a minimum term and you end it early, Planet Fitness’s FAQ states a $58 buyout fee. No-commitment plans are not charged that fee.
  1. 01
Read the agreement and the next two dates

Log in to the member portal. Note the next monthly billing date, the annual fee date, whether the plan has a minimum term, and the home club address.

  2. 02
Cancel in a way you can prove

In person, get a dated receipt. By mail, send written notice to the home club and keep a copy. Online, screenshot the portal confirmation. Some states require a specific written form; follow the club’s instructions if they give one.

  3. 03
If they draft you anyway, write the same week

Send the club and Member Services the cancel proof, the billing date, and the amount. Ask them to reverse the draft and confirm in writing that the account is closed. Member Services is listed as Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. ET, with billing questions going first to the home club when it is open.

How this works

Planet Fitness is a franchise. The membership agreement at your home club, and your state’s gym laws, decide more than the national website. The published US FAQ still gives three hard numbers: cancel at least 7 days before the next billing date to stop that charge, the same 7-day rule for the annual fee, and a $58 buyout if you end a minimum-term membership early. No-commitment plans can be canceled without that fee. Keep written proof either way.

If Planet Fitness charged you after you canceled

The 7-day rule is about stopping the next draft, not about erasing a charge that already posted. If your proof is dated more than 7 days before that draft, the refund request is that they billed a closed account.

  • Monthly draft after a timely cancel: send the confirmation and the statement line, ask for a reversal.
  • Annual fee after a timely cancel: same letter, name the annual fee date from the portal.
  • Buyout you were not told about: quote the agreement and what you were shown at signup. If the plan was no-commitment, say so.
  • Club closed or will not put the cancel in writing: mail the notice, keep the copy, then use the card-issuer summary.
Before you send, and when to escalate

Before you send

  • Cancel at least 7 days before the next draft and before the annual fee date.
  • Get the cancel in writing; a verbal “we’ll take care of it” is not proof.
  • Check whether your plan is no-commitment or has a minimum term.
  • Send billing problems to the home club first, then Member Services.

Escalate when

  • A monthly draft or annual fee posted more than 7 days after a documented cancel.
  • The club will not give written confirmation that the account is closed.
  • A $58 buyout was charged on a no-commitment plan.
Common questions
How do I cancel Planet Fitness?
The US FAQ lists three ways: visit the home club, mail written notice to the home club, or cancel in the member portal. Some locations follow extra state rules. Keep dated proof.
Why is there a $58 fee to cancel?
Planet Fitness says a $58 buyout applies if the membership has a minimum term and you end it before that term. No-commitment memberships can be canceled without that fee. Read your agreement; clubs differ.
Will they refund this month if I cancel today?
Not automatically. To stop the next monthly draft you must cancel at least 7 days before that billing date. A draft that already posted is a refund request, not a cancel.
Who do I call about a wrong charge?
The home club, if it is open. If it is closed, Member Services, Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. ET. Put the same facts in writing so you have a record for the bank.
