Spirit Airlines refund guide

How to get a Spirit Airlines refund after canceling or a disrupted flight

Twenty-four hours, or a disruption refund.

Updated October 30, 2026 · General information, not legal advice

Key facts

24-hour rule
Full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of booking and the flight is 7 or more days away. This is also a DOT requirement when you paid the airline directly.
Spirit cancels
Decline rebooking and unused flights refund automatically to the original payment method within 7 business days.
Delay or schedule change
More than 2 hours from the original departure: you may refuse to travel and get the same automatic refund. Boarding the delayed flight ends it.
Other cancels
Most fares become a reservation credit, not cash, if you cancel later. Credits expire and have no cash value under Spirit’s contract of carriage.
  1. 01
Check who you booked with, and the two clocks

The 24-hour DOT refund applies to tickets paid to the airline, not to most online travel agencies. Note the booking time and whether departure is 7 or more days out. Cancel on spirit.com or in the app at least 45 minutes before domestic departure (60 minutes at LAX and for international).

  2. 02
If Spirit canceled or delayed you more than 2 hours, do not tap accept

Read the notification. If you do not want the new flight, do not check in for it and do not accept a credit if you want cash back. Spirit says unused segments then refund automatically within 7 business days to the original form of payment.

  3. 03
If the automatic refund does not post, write

Send the confirmation code, the disruption or 24-hour cancel time, and the amount. DOT requires a prompt refund when you refuse a cancel or a significant change. You can also file a DOT consumer complaint if Spirit still will not reverse it.

How this works

Spirit fares are sold as non-refundable, with two clear exceptions. You can cancel within 24 hours of booking and get a full refund to the original payment method if the flight is at least 7 days (168 hours) away. If Spirit cancels the flight, or delays or reschedules it by more than 2 hours, you can refuse the new flight and get an automatic refund of unused segments within 7 business days. Accepting a rebooking or boarding the delayed flight ends that refund right.

What a significant change actually triggers

US rules require a refund of the ticket price when the airline cancels or significantly changes the flight and you choose not to travel. Spirit’s help page treats a delay or reschedule of more than 2 hours as that case. Do not accept the alternative if you want the cash refund.

  • Booked through an OTA: the 24-hour airline rule may not apply. Use the agency’s cancel path, then Spirit for a disruption on the operating carrier.
  • Value / most Saver-style fares after 24 hours: expect a credit, not a cash refund, unless Spirit caused the cancel or significant delay.
  • Optional bags and seats: ask that unused ancillaries follow the same refund as the unused flight.
Before you send, and when to escalate

Before you send

  • Cancel inside 24 hours only if departure is 7 or more days away.
  • Do not check in for a rebooked or delayed flight if you want the disruption refund.
  • Keep the time stamps from the booking email and the cancel or delay notice.
  • Booked through an agency: start there for the 24-hour cancel.

Escalate when

  • You canceled inside the 24-hour window and were given only a credit.
  • Spirit canceled or delayed the flight more than 2 hours and no refund posted in 7 business days.
  • You refused the rebooking in writing and were still charged for unused segments.
Common questions
Are Spirit tickets refundable?
Most fares are sold as non-refundable. The cash exceptions are the 24-hour cancel when the flight is 7+ days out, and a Spirit cancel or delay of more than 2 hours that you do not accept.
How fast is a Spirit refund?
Spirit says unused flights after a cancel or significant delay refund automatically within 7 business days to the original payment method. DOT uses the same 7-business-day clock for credit-card purchases.
What if I booked on Expedia or another site?
The 24-hour airline refund rule does not have to apply to agency bookings. Cancel with the agency first. For a Spirit-operated cancel or long delay, you can still rely on DOT refund rights against the airline.
Will I lose a reservation credit if I want cash?
Spirit credits are not cash. If you already accepted a credit after a disruption, ask in writing to reverse that and issue the refund you were entitled to instead. Do not accept the credit in the first place if you want the money back.
