Updated October 24, 2026 · General information, not legal advice

Key facts

Within 48 hours
Request a refund for an app or in-app purchase on play.google.com, under Budget & order history.
After 48 hours
Contact the app developer. It can refund under its own policy and applicable law.
Unauthorized charge
Report purchases you or anyone you know did not make within 120 days of the transaction.
Decision and money
Usually a decision within 1 business day, up to 4. Card refunds take 3 to 5 business days, sometimes up to 10.
  1. 01
    Find the order

Go to play.google.com, select your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions and Budget & order history. If the order is missing, you may have bought it on another Google Account.

  2. 02
    Choose Report a problem

Select the reason that fits, say in the form that you want a refund, and submit. One request per item; repeating it does not speed it up.

  3. 03
Past 48 hours, write to the developer

Open the app’s Play Store listing, find the developer contact email, and send a short request with the order number and what went wrong.

How this works

Timing decides where the request goes. Within 48 hours of buying an app or making an in-app purchase, you can ask Google Play directly from your order history. After 48 hours, the app’s developer handles refunds under its own policy. Charges you did not make go through a separate report that must be filed within 120 days.

Google, the developer, or your bank?

Pick the route by what happened and how long ago.

  • Bought it in the last 48 hours and changed your mind or it does not work: request a refund from Google Play.
  • More than 48 hours, or an in-app item was not delivered: contact the developer.
  • A family member bought it on your account by accident: request a refund on the Google Play website.
  • Nobody you know made the purchase: report an unauthorized charge within 120 days, and tell your card issuer.
  • Movies, books, and other content have their own refund rules, sometimes beyond 48 hours.
Before you send, and when to escalate

Before you send

  • Sign in with the Google Account that made the purchase.
  • Cancel the subscription first so it does not renew during review.
  • Copy the order number exactly from the receipt email.
  • Send one request per item, then wait for the decision email.

Escalate when

  • Google declined and the developer does not reply within a week.
  • An in-app item was paid for and never delivered.
  • Charges keep appearing after you canceled the subscription.
Common questions
Can I get a Google Play refund after 48 hours?
Usually not from Google for apps and in-app purchases. Contact the developer, who can refund under its own policy. Movies, books, and some other content have separate rules that can allow longer.
Does canceling a Google Play subscription refund my last payment?
No. Canceling stops future renewals. Request a refund for the payment that already went through, from Google within 48 hours or from the developer after that.
How long does a Google Play refund take?
Decisions usually arrive within 1 business day and can take up to 4. Once approved, a refund to a card typically takes 3 to 5 business days and sometimes up to 10.
What if I do not recognize a Google Play charge?
Check order history on every Google Account you use. If nobody you know made it, report the unauthorized charge to Google within 120 days and contact your card issuer.
